Apart from that it's an interesting take that R1 was the pirates graveyard, rather than the resurrection and eternal life in Offshore Echoes and Court reports

Correction of my mistake - It was Annie Nightingale not Janice Long who wanted to be on Caroline in 67-8. There was a bit about it in SAGA magazine or something like that years ago and she did not get hired because they did not like girls or something. Obviously before the Moorish times. Hey it's Wimbledon - how's it going Peter? Apart from that quite a funeral reminder of the departed. Thanks for cheering us up with that Mike. Of course we remember !!!

I have asked this question last year or before then under another name, but turning the official Caroline Calendar to July [3 days late] sparked the of mine August 19 question off again

If the point blank statement the day before was - you are under siege - you have no registration - your SW crap is on the wrong channel and your Dutch mates are peeing every smuggler off - shut down now or there will be consequences - say hello to Amsterdam again

Would not the sensible thing to have done a brief annulment a bit like September 1990 - a concise statement saying that RC wishes nothing but LP&GM and has done since 1964 and seeks no international illegality or confrontation so to clarify our right to be here and be free we are now temporary closing down transmissions and seeking verification of our rights to continue from international waters - we love you etc

This would have??? saved the ship, equipment, a lot of aggro???

Or maybe it would have been just boarded and wrecked , towed away in silence anyway??

I don't know, and no one else seems to have an opinion on this apart from the standard SW3 PM view - we were in international waters so you were horrible and wrong

If PC taking charge of the situation in his rubber had composed a short brief and succinct close down announcement the night before - or the instruction had been mobile phoned in from shore - The Dutch would have left the Volans with it's engines running??

Maybe if not interested in English - run out of insufficient Viewpoint income anyway - but the huge damage would not have been done?

I just think Mr SW3 thought just sod it and keep going - told PC to do that - and that was the state that resolved in

Obviously no one is interested in this except for next month when around 19 8 their will be an outpouring of indignation on the 2 other main boards saying how horrible this all was

But could it have turned out differently

Redemption has been made with Martin Rohm PPT and JIm Murphy DTI

Why was the decision made not to have a pause and evaluate the situation but just plough on through it?

Hi,
I think the raid would have gone ahead, even if the Radio Caroline organisation had known days in advance that a raid was on the horizon, and had switched off the ship's transmitters at the same time - days before the raid.
I believe a raid on the Ross had been planned to take place a couple of years earlier, but did not go ahead after the 300 ft mast collapsed. Maybe the authorities should have finished off the station then. NOT that I wanted anything like that to happen because, to my ears, Caroline 558 between 1987-1990 sounded superb.

Yes, The PM version is that a raid would have been in 1988 but the ship kindly obliged by losing the mast and then having fun with Valcom fireworks most of the early year afterwards. Having said that the fact that SW started in Spring and Radio 558 [which I thought was a very sparky sounding Dutch station actually, not like miserable wet Radio 819] started in July 88??? and before the November split had a very strong signal, could have given a [raid] window for August or later that year especially as whatever passed for registration apparently ended in January 1987

Another dubious one of those marvellous terms lawyers use [The legal precedent] was that Sausage Man American Alan Weiner proudly proclaimed at AUK Communicate 88 September in Blackpool that RNYI would be back on off Manhattan. What he did not say at the time [according to Mervyn H, who is now very quiet on here now - hope you are doing OK Mervyn] was that a silly deal was being done for the Sarah to fly the flag of the Principality of Sealand

The outcome of that was a Federal Court order of oh no you won't and with this [ legal presidency jiggery pokers Jim Murphy got fed up chasing for Shergars butchers in burger vans and according to Mervyn realised he could he tell the top Eric's there was a Legal Precedence for a signals like some anti semitic SW wafting in and out of any country with a long wire to Michigan Monitoring GCHQ to be shut down.

Obviously that basis would include anyone who is a licensed broadcaster in the home site country but pirate ships are few and far between - right?

Of course, there is something about the raid on the Ross that we will never know. And that is, we will never know... what could have been, what might have been and so on.

Even as far as the raid itself goes, did anyone believe that the unkind crew of the Volans were going to wreak such havoc? Okay, as one DJ on board the Ross Revenge said over the airwaves (can't remember if this was when the vile Volans turned up or when the unlovable Landward turned up): " They are not here to take pictures."

I don't know if you were involved with Caroline in any way, James, which I assume is not your real name (and guess what? My real name isn't 558 Fan!), but I was a listener. To my ears, Caroline 558 was the best thing since (name whatever you like here).
I was one of those Radio Caroline, in Peter Moore's own choice of words, "fanatics".
My opinion is that Radio Caroline died on November 5th 1990. To me, the station was only the real thing when it broadcast from a ship anchored at sea in international waters. Are you with me on this one, James? Are you one of those "fanatics"?

My memory is playing up (again), because I cannot now remember the name of the DJ on board the Ross Revenge on 19/08/89, who some think was a DTI spy. Nigel Harris may have even mentioned this person in his book, Ships in Troubled Waters. Maybe you can name and shame him, James? I think it may have been the same person who got in a dinghy and sailed himself over to Jim Murphy's mob on the Landward. Incidentally, I was sickened to learn some years later that Peter Moore and Jim Murphy had kissed and made up, and were sending each other Christmas cards.

August 19th will soon be with us again, and going through my mind is this thought: 'was it really 37 years ago?'
And finally...
I was never a fan of Caroline 319 (boring) and, even worse than that was the 576 era (really boring). But Caroline 558? This sound and style of this station, just like the Ross Revenge, was something truly special. And there will never be anything else like it.

35KW x 3 and then double [because of how generators and AM transmitters work together soaking the juice up] is at face value 210 plus 35 KW to run the ship

250KV generator whines - tubes blow all the time - diminishing returns - diminishing diesel - no point

M Barrington - actually one of my favourite offshore radio personalities, told a good friend of mine that he did turn up the wick to 35 but then when the on board shift changed over PC would come out and turn it back down to 24.5. This is actually quite sensible for obvious reasons

The shame I always think is that when the TX's were purchased there was the 50 - a 10 and a 5, apparently easily upgraded to 10

I don't pretend to know the prices of TXs but it was obvious the 10 was going to be needed as a standby for the 50, English or rental, which it often was much to Monique's distress

Mid 80's videos and Johnny Lewis and Barrington interviews show the meters at 24.5 and 4.5

Before the mast collapse I certainly noticed a 558 signal increase and after 3 years I believe this upgrade to potentially 10 had been made

At that level and wavelength that is not diminishing returns that is an improvement

It's a shame that M B is perhaps confusing the Paul Uppingham G,s

I don't know why Martin Stevens - as far as I know a very respected name from the 70's has to bring in the power readings

I don't know why Peter Moore feels the need to reply to them

I don't know about DTI Moles on 19/8 although I have read the insinuations

I don't care if Jim and Peter sent Valentines cards - to each other - or others

I don't care if Radio Caroline since 1968 makes Garry Stevens sick

I don't care if Radio Caroline since 1990 makes Neil Gates sick

I don't care about the power meters or the bloody Opti mod readings

Mervyn is still shouting at clouds on his Facebook page to no effect or response, as is the case with his YouTube videos. He blocked me, but his posts are public. He ocassionly comments on local groups threatening to investigate something or other.

I think it unlikely that PM has ever posted here. Why would he?

As expected, just like the Frinton Flashing memories, the August 19 at Gary's TV lounge care home have now escalated to Jim Murphy wandering around with a pistol, knocking Chicago out and beating everyone up {strangely this was not widely reported at the time - mainly due to never happening}
