Ronan O'Rahilly declared that the UK major record labels had Radio Luxembourg to themselves back in 1960-64. It was as simple as that, there was no room at the Inn for independent music promoters. In fact it is the single reason that Radio Caroline was planned and delivered, just check your Caroline Bible, it's all there!

We have already blown some of this apart by a simple case study on Joe Meek and his independent record label that had a regular show on Radio Luxembourg, not bad considering the monopoly exploitation described by Mr O'Rahilly as the cause to set up Radio Caroline.

In a new series we plan to examine older and original evidence that has recently come our way. Documented and time-lined, our focus is on Radio Luxembourg from 1956 through to 1963. You can decide for yourself, just consider the details and form your own conclusion. Foundations are vital and however old the building is, when they start to crumble, the whole house might just come tumbling down.

While the Radio Luxembourg programme magazines of the 50s and 60s do provide some core details, the '208' story about the rise and fall of Alan Freed, and the programme contractors Towers of London and Ross Radio Productions, remains totally unexplored - until now. Part of the problem is with the focused interests of radio enthusiasts who want to stay away from politics, and yet, that is where the story of these "influencers" is to be found. What the casual observer sees is the tip of an iceberg that all but disappears in the very early 1960s when the original post-WWII '208' disappeared forever. Once that visible 'tip' disappeared, all interest interest in discovering what was beneath it, also disappeared. Then came a new slate of publications that totally ignored everything that Radio Luxembourg had been from about 1946 to about 1963. That story is very dark and very political. It is documented within the world of geopolitics, but that is not where most radio fans want to go, they want to bounce along with happy memories about what they are told to remember.
